A Fiesta of Entertainment, Style

As one of Melbourne’s premier fashion hubs, the precinct became a fiesta of entertainment and style hosting a major event on this year’s L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival circuit; the Famous for Fashion runway. The show itself was an accurate reflection of the city’s erratic weather pattern - a burst of Summer, complete with a Mexican adorned cacti runway - with fragments of Autumn thrown in.

A special DJ and synth performance kicked off the evening before a runway debut by vintage clothing retailer Shag, where retro had never looked more now. A kaleidoscope of colours, prints and patterns took centre stage before FAT toned it down with a more rugged display of combat prints with a sporty edge, a theme which continued on with established streetwear label Stevie. Previously defined by its heavy influence in the Melbourne nightlife scene, this time the label added a new dimension through introducing suiting and relaxed tailoring slinking down the runway with sass.

The encroaching cooler weather was far from forgotten, where stonewashed tones of grey splashed on maxi dresses and cropped jackets by Cylk added some Winter flavour but not of the traditional cosy woolies one would associate with the season. Clashing prints and textures seem to be the order of the day with Gorman displaying yellow coats over printed shift dresses and cropped ankle boots with spotted socks, and double or triple layered denim pieces at ML Denim.

Whilst it was more ‘Outback Jack’ meets grunge at Autonomy and Jack London with their traditional earthy tones and preppy styling, designers like Alice McCall and Shakukachi brought in some dazzlers, literally. Art deco sequins adorned midriff-bearing crop tops or were etched on leather shift dresses, and a show-stopping bright orange cut out gown topped off the evening. It seems that this season, anything goes.
